While we hate to say goodbye to summer, September's silver lining is the fact we *finally* get to wear a whole host of new autumn trends – and, weather-dependent, welcome knitwear, jackets and coats back into our wardrobes. What are we looking forward to styling most for the new season, you ask? A quilted jacket.
Last year, it was that Frankie Shop two-tone onion quilted jacket we saw all over our Insta feeds. And while it is still big news in 2023 (and still in stock, so if you missed out last year, now's your chance!) there has been a second statement style of quilting outerwear that's vying for our attention in the form of a more boho aesthetic.
Rather than the practical waterproof iterations in neutral shades of green, brown, black and cream – sort of like a sister to a puffer jacket, but much less bulky and with quilted stitching – at the other end of the spectrum, we've got literal quilt jackets. As in, coats lovingly and sustainably stitched together from repurposed old quilts and blankets. Sometimes featuring floral embroidery, too. They're part cottagecore, part Americana, and yes, they do remind us of our nan a bit (in the best way).
One isn't greater than the other, it just comes down to which aesthetic you prefer. Think about where you're likely to wear the jacket, what you'll style it with, and if you want to tap into the utilitarian trend. Though no one's saying you can't try both... After all, there's no denying that for 2023 a quilted jacket is a fully-fledged outerwear mainstay.
